Extrasolar Planets

A list of blog posts directly concerning exoplanets and their parent stars

HD 10180 - Current King of the Galaxy - This is the story of a star, HD 10180, that's hogged up all of the galaxy's planets AND got itself crowned King of the Galaxy in July of 2012. Seriously, HD 10180 has 9 planets! Who gets that many planets?!? Meanwhile, poor Earth and its Solar System have to slum it with only 8 planets and this funny little thing called LIFE. That is, unless we change how a planet is categorized to include all the next largest dwarf planets [Ceres, Eris, Makemake, Huamea, and Pluto]. Possible, but bending the rules feels a bit like insider trading, doesn't it? #ElitistStarSystems

Gliese 163c: Another Red Dwarf Super-Earth Found - Of the top 6 exoplanets that are most potentially habitable, 4 of them orbit Red Dwarf stars, according to the Planetary Habitability Laboratory. Not that long ago, experts felt that Red Dwarf systems were not going to be systems that could have interesting planets. Now, the tide is changing. Will life be discovered around a Red Dwarf star instead of a Yellow Dwarf like ours? Or is it just some kind of sampling bias? #MOAREXOPLANETSPLEASE

The Story so far on Gliese 581g - the most (seemingly) habitable planet outside of the Earth - There has been some back-and-forth on how many planets Gliese 581 has. If this most recent paper is correct, the most habitable exoplanet to date may have just been confirmed #IsItaRealWorldMommy?

What the Kepler Spacecraft does for Hunting Planets (Hint: A LOT) - Kepler is a shining star in the game of planet hunting. Check out its latest stats as of July 2012 #KeplerForPresident

How to detect Exoplanets - This article briefly covers the different methods scientists use to detect exoplanets beyond our Solar System, including the new Project 1640 method, which promises to images exoplanets directly.
